When it comes to budget devices, Xiaomi’s name rings a bell on your mind, as Xiaomi not just brings you flagship phones, but their devices are also popular in the low-budget and mid-budget segment.

In their popular Redmi note series lineup, users expect the most reliable performance while spending a minimum amount of money. Last year’s most hyped mid-budget phone from Xiaomi was the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus and this year they (Xiaomi) released another mid-budget phone, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+.

For the key differences among both the devices, we can see clearly that Xiaomi made lot of changes for the new Redmi Note 14 Pro series, including the Note 14 Pro+ which comes with a center designed camera cutout, newer glass protection, a change in chipset from Mediatek to Qualcomm and bigger battery. While you do get less battery in the last year’s model, it’s always better to get a new phone with updated OS and new features.

Now, in terms of the design between both the devices, you get glass build for the front on both the devices. At first glance, you do get design changes, like camera portion differences, from ring camera to one centered camera. Sadly, there is no multi-color design option with this year’s Note 14 Pro+, which was a unique fusion purple variant of last year’s Redmi Note 13 Pro+, with vegan leather and four unique colors.

As for the build quality goes, there is an upgraded version in the newer Note 14 Pro+ with Victus 2 option. The water resistance is more durable now with up to 24 hours of dust and water resistance. Compared to Note 13 Pro+, you get around 6 grams heavier, which is not noticeable at all. Although, this time with the Redmi 14 Pro+, you will feel more premium due to the new rear camera design.

Moving on to the display section of both the devices, you will feel all the same technology features like the last year’s model, except few minor changes like improved glass protection and brightness level.

When compared with last year’s model, you get a similar AMOLED model, though there are differences in peak brightness, you get almost double brightness with up to 3000 nits. Despite this factor, you get all the greater features like Dolby Vision viewing, crisp pixel per inch and HDR10+ supported video content.

In terms of the camera qualities, there are differences in just a single lens compared to last year’s Note 13 Pro+. From the last model, there was one 200MP wide angle lens, one 8MP ultra wide lens and a 2MP macro lens. The main camera gave you pretty good results for daylight photos, as for the 8MP ultrawide lens, you could capture some extra wide images for your group photography.

Thanks to the dedicated 2 megapixel macro lens, you had the power of capturing close-up objects with ease. I personally like taking macro photos of ants or smaller objects like coins, so if you are into these, you will definitely appreciate this lens.

In the new Redmi Note 14 Pro+, you get a newer lens which is a 50MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zooming capability. You can go as high as 5x of lossless zooming power, for those who needs to capture further photos perfectly. There is also a 50MP main lens, which gives you really good photos and one 8MP ultrawide lens just like before. Shooting daylight photos results in appreciable sharpness from some artifacts and scenarios photography from the main camera lens.

One sad note is that, sadly, there is no macro lens for this year’s Note 14 Pro+, so you will miss those macro photography. For the front, you just get a megapixel upgrade with a 20MP camera instead of 16MP from last year. 

Videography is still the same, with 4K recording for the rear cameras and 1080p recording for front camera. Quality of the videos looks sharp and good enough for daylight for both the devices.

You will be disappointed in the performance section of these two devices. As the new Redmi Note 14 Pro+ gives you less processing power compared to last year’s Note 13 Pro+. To be specific, with last year’s model you had a Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip with 2.8GHz Octa-Core processing power. Which delivered really well gaming and productivity power. There was LPDDR5 RAM for all RAM variants, with up to 512GB UFS 3.1 for storage system.

In comparison with the newer Redmi Note 14 Pro+, you get literally a downside from last year, as there is the new Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chip with 4 nanometer architecture, though the processing power is just 2.5GHz, so around .3GHz less processing power compared to last year’s model.

In terms of the GPU performance, you had the Mali-G610 MC4 GPU on last year’s Redmi Note 13 Pro+, which handled popular games very well. There was little temperature issue, but that’s okay compared to high-end gaming. With this year’s Adreno GPU from Qualcomm, you get Adreno 710. In regard to gaming, playing high end games like PUBG Mobile or Free Fire ran smoothly with this performance, so no complaints here. 

Even the storage system is disappointing, instead of the fast 3.1 UFS system, you get two variants now. One with UFS 2.2 for the 12/256GB option and UFS 3.1 storage for the higher storage options, meaning you have to pay more to get faster storage now, very upsetting.

As for the audio and video performance, you get similar features like last year’s model. There’s the same Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support, giving you greater sound experience and crisp movie watching moments.

Here’s something which users love to express about Xiaomi phones, the UI and overall software experience of the devices. As for last year’s Redmi Note 13 Pro+, you had Android 13 and MIUI 14. As for charging, there is a fast charger with 90W, instead of last year’s 120W option. Don’t know why Xiaomi made this fast charging change, although getting extra battery power is what you really require.

Verdict

To keep things precise, both the mid-range flagships from Xiaomi give you some supporting performance to run your day to day applications at ease. Among these two devices, I personally liked the design of the Redmi Note 13 Pro+. You get a unique fusion purple with leather finish and four colors to give you a gorgeous feel whenever you are using it. In this year’s model, there 

You can play good battle royal games smoothly on  both the devices pretty well and without facing any issues. Take your photography skills better in the newer models, thanks to Xiaomi’s HyperOS updated features.

To give you a final solution, you can get the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ just to have the new telephoto camera power, and HyperOS features right out of the box and a higher battery life for a few more extra hours of gaming or productivity. There is a new design for the back, but it’s just not worth it for the upgraded price. There are also xiaomi budget phones to buy for perfect usage.
